Oil worker drowns during attack in Nigeria delta

JOHANNESBURG—A military spokesman in Nigeria says a worker for the local subsidiary of Italian oil company Eni SpA drowned while trying to escape an attack in the nation's oil-rich southern delta.
Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachuku said Saturday that another worker suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the attack Thursday in the winding creeks of Bayelsa state in the Niger Delta. Nwachuku said "sea robbers" attacked the Eni speedboat carrying workers away from an oil platform in the region.
Nwachuku said soldiers continued to hunt for the attackers.
In a statement Saturday, Eni confirmed the attack and said the gunmen stole the boat. Despite a 2009 government-sponsored amnesty deal with militants, violence continues sporadically in the Niger Delta. In April, gunmen attacked an Eni pipeline in the same area.

This could explain why she stripped and showed her behind in the presence of fellow housemates. The Ugandan joined her other housemates excluding Lady May and Prezzo at the Jacuzzi soon after the housemates took some shots of the booze.

Husband Deprives Wife Of Sex For Five Years

Mrs. Modupe Falola, a - house wife was said to have stunned the audience at an Agege Grade A Customary , Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, when she narrated to the how her husband, Mr. Falilu Falola denied her of for five years after their pastor allegedly told him she was suffering from a family curse.
The mother of one, who disclosed this while defending herself in a divorce suit instituted against her by her husband, alleged that trouble started between them when her husband returned from church one day and told her that she was suffering from a family curse which she had to pray fervently about for deliverance.
She added that her husband took advantage of what he heard from his prophet to treat her badly.
“ I was heavily pregnant then and immediately I delivered the baby, my husband stopped having with me and also stopped giving me money for the upkeep of the only child of the marriage,” she stated.
She alleged that her husband failed to take care of her and the child and whenever her parents invited him for reconciliation, he would refuse to honour the invitation.
Countering her position, her husband told the that he met his estranged wife through a close friend, saying that when his friend discussed about her, he told him he was not interested.
He added that Modupe was secretary to his friend, claiming that he later got to know after three months that the marriage arrangement was a conspiracy between his friend and his wife.
“ I stopped having with her five years ago, because of her bad behaviour; besides, Modupe is not friendly with the children l had from my previous marriage.
“I would not have agreed to marry her but l had to sympathize with her when she claimed that her sister’s husband had sent her away on the excuse that he was travelling abroad and since we had been dating, I had to give the marriage plan a second thought,” he said.
Falilu said he regretted later when he discovered that Modupe was troublesome and always quarrelled with neighbours.
The petitioner claimed that what really gave him concern was that his wife quarrelled with his house boy of many years, and the boy left in annoyance.
Visibly angry Falilu vowed that even if the paved the way for settlement, he had made up his mind not to have anything to do with her because they are not compatible.
After listening to both parties, the court president, Mr. Emmanuel Shokunle, adjourned the case for further hearing.

Nigerian military kills 2, arrests 26 over murder of 2 Indians

Two suspected members of the Islamic sect Boko Haram were killed and 26 others arrested by the Nigerian military in the northern Maiduguri city for their alleged involvement in the killing of two Indians.
Lt Col Sagir Musa, spokesman of the Joint Task Force in the city, said that those killed and arrested in a special operation on Thursday and yesterday were suspected of being responsible for the killings and injury as well as other attacks within the vicinity.
Two Indians -- Shanker Saha, 35, and Bokul Chander Mondal, 35 -- were knifed and stabbed to death on Wednesday when they were attacked in a Gum Arabic factory in the city. Another Indian, Biresh Yadav, 43, was injured in the attack.
The victims hailed from West Bengal and were working with M/s Adebar Trades and Industries Ltd in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The injured Indian is undergoing treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) following cuts in his neck.
"Following intelligence report available to the military, special operation was conducted on Thursday and Friday which led to the arrest of 26 terrorists and the killings of two suspected members of Boko Haram at Biafra Bula-bulin, Kasuwan Shanu and GRA in Maiduguri metropolis," Lt Col Musa said.
"Some of the suspects killed and arrested were responsible for the killings of the two Indians, a cleric and several other killings in Maiduguri in the past," Musa said, adding that some weapons were recovered from the suspects.
Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mahesh Sachdev, had demanded prompt investigation into the attack on Indian nationals.
Boko Haram has been waging a sustained war in Nigeria's northern cities in their bid to install an Islamic emirate in the country.
In January, the sect attacked the city of Kano killing more than 180 persons, including an Indian national identified as Kevalkumar Kalidas Rajput and his two Nepalese colleagues.

CNN president to resign at year's end

Jim Walton, president of CNN, says he will leave by year's end.
Jim Walton, president of CNN, says he will leave by year's end.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • CNN president will stay through end of year
  • Walton joined CNN in 1981
  • He became president of CNN in 2003
(CNN) -- The long-time President of CNN Worldwide, Jim Walton, says he will leave the company at the end of the year.
Walton, who joined the company as an entry-level video journalist in 1981, said the company needed "a new leader who brings a different perspective, different experiences and a new plan."
"For some time, I've been talking with (Turner Chairman and CEO) Phil Kent about wanting to make a change, and he supports my decision," Walton wrote in a memo to employees.
In a brief interview, Walton said that he timed his announcement to give Kent the opportunity to find a successor and "be open about it."
"It's a well-run place now," Walton said. "We have also taken a lot of effort to make it a better place to work and in putting discipline in the organization. What it has allowed CNN to do is remain profitable when journalism is under seige and reinvest in its people and its resources and that's a good thing."
During Walton's tenure, CNN has expanded worldwide, on television, digital and mobile platforms.
"When Jim Walton assumed the presidency of CNN in 2003, it was under performing and earnings were in serious decline," Time Warner CEO and Chairman Jeff Bewkes said in a statement. "Since then, he and CNN have tripled earnings, doubled margins and delivered annual growth of 15 percent."
Phil Kent, Turner's chairman and CEO, said Walton is "the leader we all aspire to be. Smart, steady, tough, and fair, business-savvy and respected by his team. His vision has modernized and globalized our legacy news brand, enhanced CNN's journalistic standing, positioned it at the forefront of multi-platform branded news content and challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further and do better. I am honored to work alongside him and proud to call him my friend."
Bewkes also praised Walton's service.
"In his nearly 31 years of uninterrupted and distinguished service to CNN, Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news," Bewkes said. "I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached."
Walton's first job, as a video journalist, was to tear apart the five-part carbon scripts for the anchors, producer and director, then run the teleprompter. He went on to learn the craft of video editing, before becoming a producer, executive producer, and then moving into senior management. He declined to say which was the toughest job.
"I have been really lucky to have done so many different jobs at this organization," Walton said. "And each has been challenging and each has been rewarding in its own way. The important thing to note here is that I'm not leaving right now. We've got an election. We've got big news happening all throughout the world and we have got a lot to do."
